TV Shows to Get Excited For in 2017

2016 marked another epic year of television, old shows were as good as ever, and new shows like Atlanta, Stranger Things and Westworld pushed the boundaries of what TV shows could be. Expect even more this year, especially from Netflix, which upped its budget to $6 billion for original shows in 2017. 

EMERALD CITY

Network: NBC

Premieres: January 6

When a tornado transports Dorothy Gale from Lucas, Kan., to the faraway land of Oz, her arrival sets in motion a prophecy about a disastrous event known as The Beast Forever and strikes fear into the land's almighty ruler, the Wizard. On her quest to meet the Wizard in Emerald City, Dorothy encounters witches, an amnesiac soldier, a sheltered little boy and many more mysterious beings who will ultimately shape the future of Oz and Dorothy's place in it.

ONE DAY AT A TIME

Network: Netflix

Premieres: January 6

The series, a multi-camera comedy, will follow three generations of the same Cuban-American family living in the same house: a newly divorced former military mother, her teenage daughter and tween son, and her old-school mother.

FRONTIER

Network: Netflix

Release Date: January 20

Featuring Jason Momoa from Aquaman, and Game of Thrones,  Frontier is set against the stunning, raw backdrop of 1700s Canada,  Frontier is a thrilling action-filled drama revolving around warring factions vying for control of the fur trade in a ruthless game of wealth and power. 

TABOO

Premieres: January 10

James Keziah Delaney (played by Tom Hardy) returns to 1814 London after 10 years in Africa to discover that he has been left a mysterious legacy by his father. Driven to wage war on those who have wronged him, Delaney finds himself in a face-off against the East India Company, whilst playing a dangerous game between two warring nations, Britain and America.

A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS

Network: Netflix

Premieres: January 13

This 8-episode Netflix show is based on the 13-book Lemony Snicket’s series. After the loss of their parents in a mysterious fire, the three Baudelaire children face trials and tribulations attempting to uncover dark family secrets.

THE YOUNG POPE

Network: HBO

Premieres: January 15

The beginning of the pontificate of Lenny Belardo (played by Jude Law), who is the first American Pope in history.

RIVERDALE

Network: The CW

Premieres: January 26

A subversive take on Archie and his friends, exploring small town life, the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale's wholesome facade.

POWERLESS

Network: NBC

Premieres: February 2

Follow the staff of an insurance company, specialising in products to protect defenseless bystanders, from the collateral damage of Superheroes and Supervillians. Starts Vanessa Hudgens and Danny Pudi.

SANTA CLARITA DIET

Network: Netflix

Premieres: February 3

Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant star as real-estate agents getting divorced, whose lives then take an unspecified “dark turn.”

24: LEGACY

Network: Fox

Premieres: February 5 

Jack Bauer may be gone, but there’s a new agent ready to shoulder the series. Eric Carter (Corey Hawkins) is a military hero who returns to the U.S. with a whole lot of trouble following him back. With nowhere else to turn, the man asks CTU to help him save his life while also stopping one of the largest-scale terror attacks on American soil.

LEGION

Network: FX

Premieres: February 8

David Haller, a.k.a. Legion, is a haunted man with power beyond comprehension. His power does not come free, but at the steep cost of David's mind. Plagued by numerous split personalities - each commanding a different aspect of his power - David is trying to find his way back to sanity. Cast including Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey), Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation), and Fargo’s Jean Smart.

GIRLS

Network: HBO

Release Date: February 12

The end of an era is upon us in 2017 as season six will be the last for Girls. These final 10 episodes get underway on February 12.

CRASHING

Network: HBO

Premieres: February 19

Pete Holmes finally gets a show worthy of his comedic talents. Crashing follows him as a New York comic who must pick up the pieces after his wife leaves him.

THE GOOD FIGHT

Network: CBS

Premieres: February 19

A spinoff of The Good Wife, The Good Fight follows Diane Lockhart as she begins work in a new Chicago law firm with former colleague Lucca Quinn and her goddaughter Maia (Rose Leslie of Game of Thrones). Delroy Lindo co-stars.

IRON FIST

Network: Netflix

Premieres: March 17

Danny Rand (played by Finn Jones of Game of Thrones), plays a young man bestowed with incredible martial arts skills and a mystical force known as the Iron Fist.

THE HANDMAID’S TALE

Network: Hulu

Premieres: April 26

Set in a dystopian future, a woman is forced to live as a concubine under a fundamentalist theocratic dictatorship, where women’s rights have been erased by a religious movement that abruptly seized power in the United States. A TV adaptation of Margaret Atwood's 1985 novel.

FARGO

Network: FX

Relase Date: Spring 2017

Details are scant, but we know that season 3 of Fargo will star Ewan McGregor playing dual lead roles, the show will be set in the near-present day (2010, according to reports), and it will be released this spring.

THE LEFTOVERS

Network: HBO

Release Date: April 

The show’s creators have announced they’ll be ending the show this year, season three will premiere in April and be the show’s final season.

AMERICAN GODS

Network: Starz

Premieres: April 

Adapted from Neil Gaiman’s 2001 novel, American Gods focuses on Shadow Moon, an ex-con recruited by the mysterious Mr. Wednesday who is recruiting the world’s forgotten gods. 

STAR TREK: DISCOVERY

Network: CBS

Premieres:  May 

Set roughly ten years before the events of Star Trek the original series, and standing apart from the timeline of the current feature films, Star Trek: Discovery follows the crew of the starship USS Discovery, while exploring an event previously mentioned in the history of the original Star Trek timeline.

GAME OF THRONES

Network: HBO

Release Date: Summer 

The 7th season will begin this summer HBO with a flurry of speculation and unanswered questions. Will George R. R. Martin finish his next book? Will Jon Snow and Daenerys hook up? Will Cersei do more evil shit? We do know that season 7 will contain just 7 episodes, and that season 8 will be the shows last. It’s also a safe bet that season 7 will have a lot of violence and nudity.

DEAR WHITE PEOPLE

Network: Netflix

Premieres: TBA 

A social satire that follows the stories of four black students at an Ivy League college where controversy breaks out over a popular but offensive black-face party thrown by white students. With tongue planted firmly in cheek, the film explores racial identity in acutely-not-post-racial America while weaving a universal story of forging one's unique path in the world.

G.L.O.W.

Network: Netflix

Premieres: TBA 

G.L.O.W (which stands for Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling) was inspired by the real story of the 1980s female wrestling league, the series — set in Los Angeles — will be the fictionalized story of an out-of -work actress who finds one last attempt to live her dreams in the form of a weekly series about female wrestlers.
